Language teaching practice often assumes that most of the difficulties that learners face in the study of English are a consequence of the degree to which their native language differs from English (a contrastive analisys approach). A native speaker of Chinese, for example, may face many more difficulties than a native speaker of German. This may be true for anyone of any mother tongue (also called first language, normally abbreviated L1) setting out to learn any other language (called a target language, second language or L2). See also secon language acquisition (SLA) for mixed evidence from linguistic research.

Language learners often produce errors of syntax and pronunciation thought to result from the influence of their L1, such as mapping its grammatical patterns inappropriately onto the L2, pronouncing certain sounds incorrectly or with difficulty, and confusing items of vocabulary known as false friends. This is known as L1 transfer or language ‘interference’. However, these transfer effects are typically stronger for beginners’ language production, and SLA research has highlighted many errors which cannot be attributed to the L1, as they are attested in learners of many language backgrounds (for example, failure to apply 3rd person present singular -s to verbs, as in ‘he makes’).

While English is no more complex than many other major languages, it has several features which may create difficulties for the majority of learners.

ESL (English as a second language), ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) and EFL (English as a foreign language) all refer to the use or study of English by speakers of other languages. The precise usage, including the different use of the terms ESL and ESOL in different countries, is described below. These terms are most commonly used in relation to teaching and learning English, but they may also be used in relation to demographic information.

ELT (English language teaching) is a widely-used teacher-centred term, as in the English language teaching divisions of large publishing houses, ELT training, etc. The abbreviations TESL (teaching English as a second language), TESOL (teaching English for speakers of other languages) and TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) are all also used.

Other terms used in this field include EAL (English as an additional language), ESD (English as a second dialect), EIL (English as an international language), ELF (English as a Lingua franca), ESP (English for special purposes, or English for specific purposes), EAP (English for academic purposes), and ELL (English language learner). A somewhat similar term, LEP (Limited English Proficiency), is also used in this field.

A foreign language is a language not spoken by the indigenous people of a certain place: for example, English is a foreign language in Japan. It is also a language not spoken in the native country of the person referred to, i.e. an English speaker living in Japan can say that Japanese is a foreign language to him or her.

Some children learn more than one language from birth or from a very young age: they are bilingual. These children can be said to have two mother tongues: neither language is foreign to that child, even if one language is a foreign language for the vast majority of people in the child’s birth country. For example, a child learning English from her English mother in Japan can speak both English and Japanese, but neither is a foreign language to her.

Internet is nowadays almost everywhere and can be very helpful. Here you can find some ideas and pages, that will help you in making exercise and get to know many different ways of learning.

- dictionaries – really lots of them, many languages, better and worse. Here I’ll give you some, that were checked by me.

http://portalwiedzy.onet.pl/tlumacz.html

http://www.ling.pl/

http://www.hiszpanski.ang.pl/slownik.php

It’s important when you can also hear the words, you’re looking for. You can’t make mistakes in pronunciation !

- read books and newspapers in original. See how the language look in everyday use.

http://www.ucc.ie/celt/published/E850003-001/text002.html – Picture of Dorian Grey, by Oscar Wilde – in english

http://www.guardian.co.uk/; http://www.independent.co.uk/; http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/global/ - the broadsheets from England

http://www.lavanguardia.es/ - teh broadsheet from Spain

- a good way to repeat words in many languages www.ang.pl

- you an also find many exercise, you just have to write the subject of you interest in the www.google.pl or www.netsprint.pl

good luck !

Kiedy już zdecydujesz się czego chciałbyś się nauczyć musisz podjąć decyzję JAK to zrobić. A to wcale nie będzie łatwe.”Cudowne” sposoby na naukę języka nie istnieją. Jest to ciężka praca, na którą musisz być przygotowany. Dlatego pierwsza istotna rzecz to odpowiednie nastawienie. Przygotowanie do ciężkiej i systematycznej pracy.

Warto go poznać !

Jak dzieci i dorośli podchodzą do nauki języków obcych ??

Dorośli i dzieci mają zupełnie inne sposoby nauki języków obcych.
